ENGLISH SCHOLARSHIPS

Briles English Scholarship
Kayla Payne

The Briles English Scholarship seeks to honor academic accomplishment in the study of English. The recipient of the Briles English Scholarship must major in English and demonstrate exemplary performance in his or her coursework. In addition, the recipient must exhibit dedication to the discipline, a strong work ethic, and enthusiasm for the major.

Daisy Moore Duvall Scholarship
Jesse Wright

In recognition of its founder, this scholarship celebrates excellence in, and dedication to, the study of English. This scholarship is awarded to an English student who is a sophomore or higher in classification and who has a minimum GPA of 3.25 and has impressed members of the English faculty with his or her performance in coursework and commitment to the discipline.

Higginbotham Family English Scholarship
Nikki Ennis

The Higginbotham Family established this scholarship to celebrate and foster excellence in the study of English. The Higginbotham Family Scholarship in English is awarded to an ECU student majoring in English who exhibits a high level of academic achievement evidenced by the fact that he or she has a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above.

J.H. and Joyce Criswell Scholarship
Cheyenne Counts

In recognition of the wishes of its founders and with support of the Ada Arts and Humanities Council, the Criswell Memorial Scholarship is awarded to ECU seniors majoring in English who have demonstrated excellence in creative writing and show promise for future creative endeavors.

Judy Carroll Centennial Memorial English Scholarship

In memory of Judy Carroll, a devoted student and lover of English, the Judy Carroll Centennial Memorial Scholarship honors academic success and facilitates the opportunity to study English at the collegiate level. Recipients of this award are English majors who have demonstrated extraordinary academic ability as well as commitment to the discipline. Recipients must be sophomore level or above and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.

The Little Family Professional Writing Scholarship
Lyndsey Key

This scholarship recognizes notable achievement and promotes future potential in the area of professional writing. Students interested in careers in any aspect of professional writing may apply: creative writing, journalism, technical writing, or any other type of professional writing. In addition to the scholarship application, students must submit a writing sample and an explanation of their future plans as professional writers. Recipients are selected on the basis of a strong academic record, quality of their writing sample, and the specificity of their goals as professional writers.

Margaret Nims Centennial Writing Scholarship
Ashley Bean

In honor of its founder, this scholarship celebrates and promotes academic excellence in English, particularly in writing. The scholarship is awarded to an English major who holds at least sophomore standing and carries a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above.

May Sanders Burns Scholarship
Min Ha Kim

This scholarship will be awarded to a freshman who plans to major in English, and who has a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above.  The recipient will be chosen based on need and the inability to qualify for any other scholarship assistance.  This scholarship was endowed by Mrs. Anita Floyd of Ada, Ms. Burns’ niece.

Molly Shi Boren English Scholarship
Elyse Marquardt

The Molly Shi Boren English Scholarship honors academic excellence and facilitates collegiate level study of English. Recipients of the award are English majors who have demonstrated an exemplary level of academic achievement as well as a notable degree of initiative and enthusiasm for the discipline.

Ozella Elizabeth Waner Scholarship
Arian Norman

Expressive of its founder’s commitment to promoting the study of English, the Ozella Elizabeth Waner Scholarship recognizes the exemplary performance of an incoming freshman and facilitates his or her collegiate study and completion of an English degree at ECU. The Ozella Elizabeth Waner Scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman student who has declared a major in English, has at least a score of 25 on the ACT, and has demonstrated both an aptitude for and commitment to the study of English in and through a competitive application process. This scholarship can continue for a maximum of four years. The recipient must maintain a cumulative 3.25 GPA in order to continue the scholarship.

Reed Loving-Watt Scholarship
Teighlor Fortner

The Reed Loving-Watt Scholarship honors and empowers student achievement in English and Languages. The recipient of The Reed Loving-Watt Scholarship is an English and Languages major with a minimum of twelve semester hours who maintains a GPA of 3.0 or above.

Sara Randall Memorial English Scholarship
Amelia Stevens

In memory of Sara Randall, a junior at ECU majoring in English when she passed away, the Sara Randall Memorial Scholarship celebrates academic excellence and seeks to provide assistance to talented students majoring in English. The Sara Randall Memorial English Scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior majoring in English who has maintained at least a 3.25 GPA and demonstrated clear enthusiasm for, and dedication to, the study of English.

The Wanita Danley Centennial English Honors Scholarship
Anna Talkington

The scholarship was born of its founder’s desire to promote excellence in academics, particularly the study of English in and through participation in ECU’s Honors program. This scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior majoring in English who is also a member of the Honors Program, a candidate who epitomizes academic achievement both in the study of English and in the honors curriculum. 

The Young Family Centennial Scholarship
Cayla Odom

The Young Family established this scholarship in order to acknowledge and encourage strong academic performance in English. The Young Family scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in English who has completed a minimum of 59 hours and demonstrates consistently strong performance both in his or her English coursework and generally.

Best Poem in Originals Award
Charlynn Estes

This award is given to the best poem in each year’s issue of Originals and is determined and funded by Dr. Hugh Tribbey of the ECU Department of English and Languages.

Students submit their best work written for English and Humanities courses in the past year. Several faculty members from the department judge these entries and identify one outstanding essay in each of the five categories.

Outstanding Student Teacher Award
Kelsea Rabe

This award honors the English Education major who, after completing his or her necessary coursework and student teaching assignment, is recognized by the department as demonstrating extraordinary aptitude and enthusiasm for the profession of teaching English. The recipient must have not only an outstanding academic record, but have evidenced excellence in teaching during the course of his or her student teaching placement.

Paul Hughes Memorial Writing Award

Third Prize: Emily Davis

The Paul Hughes Memorial Writing Award recognizes quality achievement in the production of original creative compositions. The recipient of the award has demonstrated an outstanding level of achievement in fiction, poetry, drama, or essay. The competition is open to all ECU students.

Senior Portfolio Award
Charlynn Estes

This award recognizes the superlative achievement of a senior English major, namely, his or her production of an outstanding portfolio, a portfolio that demonstrates both a breadth and depth of literary knowledge, notable analytical ability, impressive style and innovation, intellectual versatility, and technical precision.

Student Research Recognition

Promoting undergraduate research is a priority at ECU and the Department of English and Languages fosters the development of student scholars in a variety of ways. Through traditional coursework, informal mentoring, thesis advising, independent study, and no less importantly, through example, our faculty help students enter the academic conversation in and through their research efforts. The following students have earned recognition by virtue of the quality of their scholarly accomplishments.

Beatrice Wisehart Spanish Scholarship
Taylor Kennedy

The Beatrice Wisehart Spanish Scholarship honors achievement in Spanish language study, particularly at the junior and senior level. The recipient of this award will have demonstrated extraordinary aptitude in advanced courses in Spanish as well as commitment to the ongoing practice of the Spanish language in his or her personal and professional life.

Eleanor Dedmon Waner Scholarship
Chisum Henry

Consistent with its founder’s commitment to promoting language study, the C.B. and Eleanor Dedmon Waner Spanish Scholarship recognizes the exemplary performance of an incoming freshman and facilitates his or her collegiate study and completion of a Spanish minor at ECU. The C.B and Eleanor Waner Dedmon Scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman student who has declared a minor in Spanish, has at least a score of 25 on the ACT, and has demonstrated both an aptitude for and commitment to the study of Spanish in and through a competitive application process. This scholarship can continue for a maximum of four years. The recipient must maintain a cumulative 3.25 GPA in order to continue the scholarship.

Oscar L. Parker Spanish Scholarship

Expressive of the wishes of its founder, The Oscar L. Parker Spanish Scholarship promotes excellence in foreign language study, particularly the study of Spanish, through the recognition of a student who epitomizes outstanding ability in his or her coursework as well as extraordinary dedication to the acquisition of a second language.


Luther Edge Spanish Scholarship

In recognition of the founder’s desire to acknowledge and encourage the academic achievement of Spanish speaking students and/or students minoring in Spanish language study, the Luther Edge Spanish Scholarship celebrates the high achievement of a student majoring in English and Languages, a student who has exhibited not only outstanding academic performance, but also dedication and initiative.

This scholarship will be awarded to assist students traveling to Russia, and was established by Linda Ainsworth in memory of her husband Gary.

Lemoine Crabtree Russian Award

In recognition of its founder’s desire to acknowledge and support academic excellence in foreign language study in Russian, the Lemoine Crabtree Russian Award recognizes the student who demonstrates both an exemplary level of academic achievement and dedication to the study of Russian language and culture. This award is determined by both the English and Languages Department and the ECU Foundation.

Mara Sukholutskaya Travel Fund

This scholarship will be used at the discretion of the English/Languages department and the Global Education Committee. Dr. Sukholutskaya is a long-time ECU faculty member, and this scholarship was established in memory of her mother.
